So, last year we built a salad table. The thyme and oregano wintered over nicely, and this spring, we decided to add some salad greens to the mix. We picked up some yummy looking lettuce and swiss chard and planted them on a cool spring day.
Not two days later, one of the lettuce plants had completely disappeared and all the swiss chard had been up-rooted. Given the table’s height, we’re guessing squirrels were to blame. I sprinkled cayenne pepper on and around everything for the next few days, which kept the marauders at bay until the weekend and a more industrious solution.
Since this seems to have done the trick (at least for now), we’ve added pepper and squash plants. There just might be some salad in our future.
